What are the Side Effects of Dental Lidocaine?

If you experience any blue or bluish purple discoloration on your lips, nails, or skin, or if you have headaches, dizziness, fainting, drowsiness, or difficulty breathing after receiving dental lidocaine, it is important to contact your dentist right away. Additionally, it is important to be aware that when the gum is numb from the anesthetic, serious injuries can occur. This is because local anesthetics can cause accidental injuries due to the lack of sensation. For example, you may inadvertently bite your tongue, lips, or the inside of your cheeks, which could lead to serious injuries. This is especially important to keep in mind when it comes to children, as they may be less aware of the potential risks.

In a study of 78 articles related to local anesthetics in dentistry, 66 (84.6%) specified the care environment in which adverse effects occurred. These included general dental clinics (53.9%), oral and maxillofacial surgery departments in hospitals (20.5%), university dental clinics (6.4%), and a military clinical center (1.3%).Local anesthetics are commonly used in dentistry to prevent pain during treatments and make the experience more comfortable for both the patient and dentist. In addition to this, local dental anesthesia can also be used as a diagnostic tool to differentiate between dental pain and temporomandibular joint dysfunction. However, many dental procedures require the use of a local anesthetic to block pain during treatment. Adverse reactions have been reported after administration of local dental anesthesia for endodontic treatments (11.5%), restorations (10.3%), and training in local anesthesia from student to student (1.3%).

Another adverse effect described was the breakage of dental anesthetic needles during administration. General dentists should be aware of the possible adverse effects associated with local dental anesthesia. One possible explanation for heart disorders related to dental treatment is fear, anxiety, or pain.
